Algona, IA

Where did you go to school?

Algona High School (public) and then to Wartburg for undergrad.

How did you get into Cross Country? When did you start?

Friends talked me into it as a Junior in high school.  I regret not starting sooner.  It’s actually my biggest high school regret.  I volunteer coached with my old high school team summers during college, and have found some sort of coaching in Cross Country since then.

What is your favorite thing about counseling and coaching?

Connecting with students- getting to know them and their hopes/fears/etc.  Helping motivate them to achieve their goals.

What is the most rewarding part about your job?

Seeing the payoff of the hard work students do.  Whether that is overcoming an obstacle and graduating or accepted into their dream school; running a PR or becoming all-state.

Who does your family consist of?

My son, Marshall, is 5 and will be in kindergarten and my daughter, Cora, is 3

Favorite food & restaurant?

This is tough.  There isn’t much I don’t like.  I do think of myself as a sub connoisseur and really like places like Jersey Mike’s, Which Wich, Cappriottis, etc.

Favorite movie & TV show?

Shawshank Redemption is far and away my favorite movie.  TV show is tougher, but I’ve long been a Seinfeld fan.

Hobbies outside of teaching & coaching?

I love playing trivia and does being a fan of the Hawkeyes count as a hobby?  If so, then that’s my number one hobby.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be?

Abraham Lincoln.  My favorite president and I like to read/learn more about him as a leader.

What is your favorite part about Waukee?

The people and the pride the people take in their school, athletics and activities.  Everyone pours a huge amount of energy into their field.
