Waukee Wrestlers place Sixth at State Duals, Ninth at State Meet
The Waukee High School wrestling team enjoyed a successful week of State Tournament wrestling at Wells Fargo Arena. The Warriors began Wednesday by placing sixth in the State Dual tournament. Waukee lost to #3 Fort Dodge in the quarterfinals by a score of 41-29, then rebounded with a 40-25 victory over Indianola. Fourth-ranked Bettendorf defeated Waukee in the fifth-place match 40-29. It was the third consecutive appearance in the State Dual Tournament for Waukee after placing fifth in 2019 and second in 2018.
Seven Waukee wrestlers qualified for the State Traditional Tournament contested last Thursday through Saturday. Led by three third-place finishes the Warriors placed ninth as a team. Senior Cody Anderson closed out his high school career with his fourth state medal placing third at 152 pounds. Junior Thurman Christensen improved on his 4th place finish a year ago at 120 pounds, and Griffin Gammell completed a very successful sophomore season placing third at 182 pounds. Junior Connor Kelley earned a spot on the podium as well, placing seventh at 126 pounds. Juniors Elijah Hofbauer and Jermaine Sammler, as well as, sophomore Tanner Spyksma all contributed to the team’s point total but did not medal.
